Swim School History

Swimming has always been an integral part of the Yacht Club. At one time, swim activities and lessons were taught from the beach and dock. In the 1960s, Stocky Holly led the swimming program, placing a large plastic tarp on the bottom of the lake to control weeds and provide a place to teach swimming. While the tarp was unsuccessful, it led the Board to authorize the construction of a pool in 1964. Past Commodore Fred Fishel was instrumental in raising funds through bonds sold to club members.

For years, members' children served as lifeguards and instructors. Dolly Morton, who previously taught swimming at the Yacht Club and Sylvan Beach, provided Red Cross Certification. In 1967, we hired Jim “Red” Heeres to teach swimming. For over 30 years, Jim led our swim school each summer, offering lifeguard training and Red Cross certification to those who completed the program. His exceptional leadership set a standard that we uphold to this day.

WLYC takes pride in offering four, two-week swim school sessions at various skill levels, ranging from toddler to advanced swimmer throughout the season. Our lifeguards and instructors are highly qualified, and many are WLYC-trained. Upon graduation, students are awarded a certificate, and we commemorate the occasion with cake and lemonade. Additionally, students have the honor of placing their handprints on the boards encircling our pool area. to edit
